The Best Blush for Acne-Prone Skin

Those with acne-prone skin need to be extra careful when it comes to the makeup products they use — and of course blush is no exception. It’s one thing to find a blush that’s the right shade, it’s another to find one that works with your skin.

Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind when choosing the right blush for acne-prone skin:

1) Find a blush that works well with texture

Blush comes in a variety of formats - such as powder, cream, liquid, and oil to name a few. The key to a seamless base (and blush) with acne prone skin is choosing a formula of blush that works well with your skin texture. Powder blushes tend to pick up dry patches and look patchy over texture. Some people also have sensitivities to talc and mica, which are often found in powder blush formulas. Cream and liquid blushes are better, but can look cakey and thick and sit on top of the skin. An oil blush format, like our BYO Blush, is the best of both worlds. Its lightweight texture sinks into the skin for a barely-there finish, and it’s packed with hydrating ingredients to help calm and soothe any acne wounds.

2) Choose a blush with an acne-fighting formula

It takes time for acne to heal, so putting makeup on top doesn’t help. It's worth noting that the cheeks are a super common place for pimples to appear on people — hence why those with acne-prone skin should be wary of what's in their blush formulas. This isn’t to say you can’t use makeup when you have breakouts, it just means you should use skin-friendly formulations. A lot of makeup is formulated with ingredients that can further irritate the skin, such as alcohol, fragrance, or microplastics. When choosing a blush, aim for a blush that’s formulated with ingredients that love your skin back. BYO Blush is formulated with over 20 plant-based oils to nourish and hydrate the skin. It also includes acne-fighting ingredients such as Turmeric (which has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties) and Willow Bark Extract (which is known as a gentler version of salicylic acid)

Bonus Tip: Keep the bacteria out of your makeup!

One of the most underrated tips to help minimize acne and breakouts is to be cognizant about the way you’re applying your makeup. Bacteria from acne spreads very easily so applying makeup directly to your face can increase the spread of bacteria.  Instead of applying the applicator straight on your skin, apply to a brush and then apply on your skin. This keeps any bacteria off of the applicator and keeps it from getting into the remaining makeup formula.
